Great Service Last Sunday, and an Exciting Weekend with Carols on the Block Ahead.

Last weekend, Jean Shannon, Amelia Peisley and Barry Piesley gave an inspiring service which looked into the importance of true hospitality, as well as sharing a communion with the congregation.

Jean delivered a contemporary word on the importance of radical hospitality, of treating others not merely as guests but as equals for whom we can share experiences and cultures with. The word carried a message of being open to adapting and changing trough welcoming others. This word drew from the teachings found in Matthew, and offers lessons on how the Uniting Church can improve the way it engages with its culturally and linguistically diverse churches.

Family and Friends Welcome at Carols on the Block 2013

carols on the block

Carols on the Block 2013 is a great annual community event in Curtin.

It will be a great chance to relax with family and friends, sing your favorite carols and hear the Christmas story.

Carols are a great outing suitable for anyone to get together and share in the music and warmth of our community.

The Carols take place each year in the Vacant Block across the street from St James and the Curtin Shops, making them the perfect outing and escape for a warm late spring evening.

If it does rain however, there’s no need to worry because there is a backup venue available at Holy Trinity School Hall – 18 Theodore St, Curtin.

Charity Concert for Pegasus a Galloping Success!

Thanks to the hard work of the St James Social Justice and Inclusiveness Group, the Pegasus Concert raised in the order of $2500 and much good will for local charity Pegasus.

Pegasus helps to provide opportunity for people with a disability in Canberra through the power of horse riding. This helps to build essential skills like co-ordination, balance, muscle development and fitness.  It also boosts personal confidence, self-esteem, communication skills, leadership and trust. You can visit their website at http://www.pegasusact.com.au/

A big thank you to everyone who came along , and a reminder for those who came for the first time that they are always welcome in our community.

We were blessed to have 3 great local musical acts performing, all of whom have taken up the opportunity to use St James as a place for weekly rehearsals.

A big shout out to the performers,

The Shiny Bum Singers  – comical / satirical songs about the public service and politics.

Encuentro – a guitar/singing group which specializes in Latin American songs.

Ukulele Republic of Canberra – 13 singing ukulele players.

We also had the pleasure of hearing from local storyteller, Brian Hungerford.

As if this wasn’t enough, those who came along had the chance to enjoy a fantastic afternoon tea in the best tradition of St James afternoon teas.
